What are ground protection mats made of?
Matunion ground protection mats are manufactured from virgin HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) or UHMWPE (Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene). HDPE is used for standard applications up to 200 tons; UHMWPE is specified for extreme loads, tracked equipment, and abrasive ground. Both materials are 100% recyclable, waterproof, UV-stabilized, and resistant to chemicals, oil, and corrosion.
How much weight can HDPE ground protection mats hold?
HDPE mats are rated over 200 tons and UHMWPE mats over 600 tons static load. Capacity depends on mat thickness and ground conditions; contact us for a thickness recommendation. On soft, saturated, or unverified ground, the subgrade is usually the limiting factor.
How many ground protection mats do I need?
Each 4×8 ft mat covers ~2.98 m² (32 sq ft). For a single-lane access road (10 ft wide): 10 mats per 40 ft of road. For a 100-ft single lane: 25 mats. For double-lane: 50 mats. Add 20% for turning areas and staging pads. We provide free layout planning for orders over 100 mats — send your site dimensions.
Can you drive tracked equipment on HDPE ground mats?
Yes, but with qualification. Rubber-tired vehicles and straight-line tracked travel work fine on 12.7mm HDPE. For tracked equipment that pivots, turns, or skid-steers, upgrade to 20mm+ UHMWPE. The rotational shear of steel tracks on a pivot can gouge standard HDPE. The rule: straight travel = HDPE; turning/twisting = UHMWPE.
