HDPE Ground Protection Mat — 4×8 ft Standard Duty
HDPE Standard Ground Protection Mat
The A1S1 Spoke of Matunion's ground protection line. This 4×8 ft HDPE mat is the workhorse of temporary access across soft, wet, or sensitive ground. Virgin HDPE, double-sided diamond tread, and six handholds make it a two-person carry that deploys in 30 seconds. At 12.7mm thickness, it spreads load across 2.98 m²; actual ground pressure depends on equipment weight and soil conditions. Contact us for the 12.7mm load rating. No crane. No plywood that delaminates after three rains. A single set replaces plywood 12 times over and steel plate logistics entirely.

Load Capacity & Ground Pressure
Mat strength is rarely the limiting factor. What fails is the soil underneath. Here is how to read the numbers.
A 4×8 ft mat distributes a load across 2.98 m² (4,608 in²). As an example, an 80-ton (160,000 lb) load spread over one mat produces about 35 PSI — within the bearing capacity of compacted gravel and firm hardstand, but above that of soft or saturated soils. Without a mat, the same load concentrates on a much smaller track contact patch and produces far higher pressure, which is the difference between driving across a lawn and sinking to the axles.
Any load rating assumes competent ground: dry compacted gravel, firm turf, or graded hardstand. As soon as the subgrade softens, the soil fails long before the mat does. The mat bends, soil yields, and the equipment loses traction or sinks. Capacity is set by the subgrade and by mat thickness — contact us for a project-specific recommendation.
Derating Rule
Published capacity assumes firm, competent ground. On soft, saturated, or unverified ground, the subgrade is usually the limiting factor. Reduce the load or use a thicker mat, and contact us for a project-specific recommendation.
HDPE Standard Size Range & Coverage
Six standard sizes from the same 12.7mm HDPE formulation. Every size uses the same diamond tread pattern, cleat height, and U-Connector compatibility.
| Size (ft) | Size (mm) | Coverage per Mat | Weight (kg) | Handholds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 8 | 1220 × 2440 | 2.98 m² (32 sq ft) | 38–42 | 6 |
| 3 × 8 | 910 × 2440 | 2.22 m² (24 sq ft) | 28–32 | 6 |
| 3 × 6 | 910 × 1830 | 1.67 m² (18 sq ft) | 21–24 | 4 |
| 2 × 8 | 610 × 2440 | 1.49 m² (16 sq ft) | 19–22 | 4 |
| 2 × 6 | 610 × 1830 | 1.12 m² (12 sq ft) | 14–17 | 4 |
| 2 × 4 | 610 × 1220 | 0.74 m² (8 sq ft) | 9–12 | 4 |
Quick Calculation: Mats for a 100 ft Access Road
For a single-lane road 8 ft wide, lay 4×8 mats two-across in the direction of travel: 100 ft ÷ 8 ft per mat = 13 rows × 2 mats across = 26 mats. For a 12 ft wide lane (three mats across): 13 rows × 3 = 39 mats. Add 20% for turning areas and staging pads. A standard 50-mat order covers roughly 175–200 linear feet of single-lane access with a modest staging pad at one end.
Installation Guide
No heavy equipment needed. Two workers, four steps.
Clear & Grade the Route
Remove rocks larger than 75mm and fill soft spots deeper than 150mm with compacted gravel. Grade to within ±50mm of level. Mats will bridge minor depressions, but voids beneath the mat create bending stress that shortens service life.
Lay Mats in Traffic Direction
Place each mat with its long edge perpendicular to the direction of travel. Overlap adjacent edges 50–100mm. Stagger joints between rows so no four corners meet at one point — this prevents the weakest-link intersection that fails first under repeated loading.
Install U-Connector Pins
Drive a U-Connector pin at every joint. On straight, level runs, one pin per two-mat joint is sufficient. At slopes exceeding 3%, turns, and intersections, pin all four corners of every mat. This prevents mat lift when equipment brakes or accelerates.
Anchor Uphill Edge on Grades
On grades over 5%, install steel anchor stakes at the uphill edge of the top row of mats and at every third row thereafter. This arrests the entire mat field from creeping downhill under load. Use 300mm minimum stake length in firm soil; 450mm in loose or sandy ground.
Deployment Speed: 540 ft² in 15 minutes with 2 workers
18 mats placed. No crane. No forklift. Each mat: lift, walk, drop, pin. Repeat.
Surface Pattern Options — HDPE U-Mat Series
Five common tread patterns for the HDPE 12.7mm mat. All are double-sided. Each pattern is a different mold — specify at order.
General Purpose Diamond Tread
Standard diamond pattern, 5mm cleat height. Best all-around traction for rubber-tired vehicles and foot traffic. Drains in all directions. 90% of orders ship with U-Mat A.
Aggressive Multi-Directional Grip
Deeper 7mm cleats in a criss-cross geometry. Designed for slopes over 8% and wet clay conditions. Superior bite under braking. Slightly heavier at 44–48 kg.
Mixed Traffic / Pedestrian
Fine-grain texture with intermittent 3mm raised bars. Smoother underfoot for pedestrian events and stadium turf protection. Still provides adequate grip for light vehicles up to 20 tons.
Smooth-Textured Hybrid
50% smooth surface, 50% textured. Optimized for tracked equipment that needs slide clearance on turns but grip on straight travel. Reduces rotational gouging on pivot maneuvers.
Rapid Drainage Channel
Parallel drainage channels 4mm deep running the length of the mat. Moves standing water off the surface in under 3 minutes after rain. Used in wet climates and for mats that stay deployed for weeks at a time.
HDPE Mat vs Plywood vs Steel Plate
Ten-year total cost of ownership, side by side. The numbers explain why contractors switch after one season of plywood.
| Factor | HDPE Mat (12.7mm) | Plywood (3/4″) | Steel Plate (1/4″) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weight (4×8 ft panel) | 38–42 kg (84–93 lbs) | 32–36 kg (70–80 lbs) | 153 kg (337 lbs) |
| Lifespan | 10+ years, 1,000+ cycles | 3–6 months, 5–15 uses before delamination | 3–5 years outdoor (rust), 8+ years indoor |
| Water Resistance | Zero absorption (<0.01%). Hose off mud. No swelling, no rot. | Absorbs 25–40% of its weight in water. Swells, delaminates, grows mold. | Rusts. Requires painting or galvanizing. Rust stains transfer to concrete and turf. |
| Traction (wet) | Diamond tread, both sides. Coefficient of friction 0.6–0.8 wet. | Smooth; slick when wet. COF drops below 0.3. Requires anti-slip paint or chicken wire. | Smooth; near-zero traction when wet or muddy. Checker plate improves grip but adds 15% weight. |
| Handling | 2 workers carry and place. No equipment needed. | 2 workers. Splinters. Heavy when waterlogged. | Crane or forklift required for every move. 4× the labor cost per placement. |
| Cost — 10-Year TCO (50 mats) | ~$3,500 one-time. No replacement. $350/year over 10 years. | ~$800 per set × 40 replacements over 10 years = $32,000. | ~$7,500 per set × 2–3 replacements + crane rental = $25,000–$35,000. |
| Environmental | 100% recyclable HDPE. No leaching. Can be downcycled into new products end-of-life. | Most plywood is glued with urea-formaldehyde. Not recyclable. Landfill after 3 months. | Recyclable as scrap steel. High embodied energy in production. Rust contamination risk. |
| ISPM-15 (International Shipping) | Exempt. No wood treatment required. No fumigation certificate. Clears customs in hours. | Requires heat treatment or methyl bromide fumigation. ISPM-15 stamp mandatory. Customs delays common. | Not applicable. No phytosanitary concerns. |
