Utilities & Renewable Energy — Ground Protection for Power, Rail, Wind & Solar
Power Lines, Turbines, and Solar Panels — All Built on Soft Ground
Power Transmission & Distribution
Transmission tower erection and substation construction happen in remote locations — across farmland, through forests, over wetlands. Cranes lifting 50-ton tower sections and transformers need stable hardstands. Non-conductive HDPE mats are critical for electrical safety — no risk of ground current conduction. Buried utility protection mats prevent heavy equipment from crushing underground cables and pipelines at crossing points. Here's what most suppliers won't tell you: a 40,000-lb load at 2 ft of cover depth transmits only ~5.5 PSI to buried pipes through a proper load-spreading mat. At 7 ft of cover, the transferred load becomes negligible.
Wind Farm Construction
Transporting a 70-meter turbine blade up a mountain on a 12-axle trailer requires a road that doesn't exist yet. HDPE access mats create temporary haul roads capable of supporting blade transport vehicles with 40+ tons per axle. Crane pads at each turbine site support the 600-ton crawler crane that lifts the nacelle and rotor into place. Without mats, the access roads would need to be permanent gravel construction — adding millions to project cost and years to the permitting process. Mats come up after commissioning. The mountain returns to its original state.
Solar Farm Installation
A 100MW solar farm covers 400+ acres of agricultural land. During construction, 400+ workers, pile drivers, flatbed semis delivering 620 modules per truck, and concrete mixers for inverter pads all need access across soft fields. Without mats, vehicle ruts damage farmland soil structure — triggering landowner disputes and environmental fines. HDPE mats create defined access corridors, HGV turning points, and staging areas. Solar panel delivery vehicles and transformer transport trailers operate safely on 224-mats configurations documented in winter installation case studies where temperatures hit -20°C.
Railway Access — RRAPs
Road-Rail Access Points (RRAPs) are where construction vehicles transition from the highway onto the track bed. Network Rail in the UK specifies MaxiTrack-style modular HDPE trackway for RRAP construction. 180 mats can form a complete RRAP supporting 50-tonne road/rail excavators, dumper trucks, and commercial vans. Mats weigh only 40 kg each — hand-installable in live rail environments without lifting equipment. Overlapping flange design with secure fixings locks mats in place even under turning and reversing loads. Temporary tarmac costs thousands and needs to be removed. Reusable matting goes to the next project.
Pipeline & Utility Crossings
When a new pipeline crosses under an existing road, railway, or waterway, the construction equipment needs protection mats on both sides of the crossing. HDPE mats protect the approach routes, prevent soil erosion into the waterway, and create stable working platforms for the drilling or trenching equipment. Chemical-resistant UHMWPE handles drilling mud and bentonite without degradation.
Telecom & Infrastructure
Cell tower construction and maintenance in remote locations. Bucket trucks and drilling rigs for tower foundations need stable access across soft terrain. Non-conductive HDPE mats are safe for crews working near energized equipment. Light enough to be deployed from a pickup truck. Reusable across hundreds of tower sites.
Wind Farm Construction — Access & Crane Platform Engineering
Turbine Component Delivery
Components arrive via port and are trucked to site using specialized transport. Route planning with DOT required — temporary road widening, roundabout overruns, junction bypasses. Deliveries often at night. Pre- and post-construction road condition surveys standard. Crane platforms: 12-inch-thick timber mats installed in layers, relocatable from pad to pad.
Peat Stability & Environmental Management
Peatland sites require upslope cut-off drains, 30-degree slope-back on excavations, immediate backfilling, low-ground-pressure machinery on peat >1m depth, catch wall fences, and daily monitoring. Wetland impacts require compensation funds. Bird and bat studies must be submitted. Sediment/erosion control, stormwater management, and spill prevention plans required.
Access Mat Selection for Wind Farms
12-inch-thick timber mats: most popular for temporary access roads. Engineered hardwood mats that float: for wetland/marsh crossings. Composite/CLT mats: cost-effective for lighter-duty work areas. Geosynthetics (MIRAFI RS i-Series): subgrade stabilization on poor soil/weak subgrades. Onshore wind farm technical specification published March 2024 covers road and crane pad construction standards.
