Oil & Gas — Ground Protection for Drilling, Pipeline & Remote Operations
The Oilfield Runs on Access Mats
From the Alaskan North Slope to the Saudi Arabian desert, oil and gas operations happen where roads don't exist. Rig mats — also called access mats, swamp mats, or board road mats — are the first thing that goes down on any new lease. Without them, a $500,000 drilling rig sinks into the muskeg and your project stops before it starts.
Drilling Rig Platforms
A complete drilling rig with substructure, drawworks, mud pumps, and pipe rack can exceed 600 tons. That weight concentrated on soft tundra, desert sand, or wetland will cause differential settlement — the rig tilts, pipe handling fails, and you're looking at a multimillion-dollar recovery operation. DURA-BASE style interlocking UHMWPE mats create a continuous, level platform that distributes rig weight evenly. Mats stay locked under the vibration and cyclic loading of drilling operations. Used by major operators on six continents.
Pipeline Right-of-Way Access
Pipeline construction means moving side-boom pipelayers, welding rigs, and excavators along a narrow corridor through farmland, wetland, and forest. In marshy conditions, 18-ft timber mats or heavy-duty HDPE mats create a continuous working platform for the entire spread. Mats protect the right-of-way from rutting and compaction — critical for meeting environmental permit conditions. On the cleanup pass, the mats come up and the ground recovers. ISPM-15 compliant HDPE mats require no fumigation, saving time at every border crossing.
Camp Mats & Tank Farm Foundations
Remote drilling camps house 50-200 workers for months. Generators, fuel tanks, water storage, sewage systems — all need stable ground. HDPE mats create instant foundations for the entire camp infrastructure. Chemical-resistant UHMWPE won't degrade from diesel spills, drilling mud, or produced water. When the well is complete, the camp is dismantled and the mats go to the next location.
Desert Operations — Sand & Heat
Loose desert sand offers almost zero bearing capacity — a pickup truck can bog down without mats. UV-stabilized HDPE mats rated to +80°C create instant roads across dunes and sabkha. The interlocking system prevents sand from working between mat joints and creating trip hazards. For Aramco, ADNOC, and Qatar Petroleum specification projects in the GCC.
Arctic & Tundra Operations
Working on permafrost means you cannot disturb the insulating vegetation layer — once the permafrost melts, the ground turns to soup and never recovers. UHMWPE mats rated to -80°C provide a thermal break between warm equipment and frozen ground. Used on Alaska North Slope, Canadian oil sands, and Siberian pipeline projects. Mats also prevent equipment from cracking through ice lenses in spring breakup conditions.
Rig Move Logistics
Moving a drilling rig 20 km to the next pad site means disassembling it into 50+ truckloads, each weighing 40-60 tons. Without mats at both the origin and destination, those trucks never get out of low gear. HDPE access mats at both locations create stable loading/unloading zones capable of handling the concentrated weight of rig components on lowboy trailers.
Environmental Compliance — Wetland & Protected Area Access
Wetland Crossing Permits
Chapter 105 encroachment permits (PA) and similar state/federal wetland regulations require strict ground disturbance limits. HDPE mats with geotextile base layers provide zero-fill temporary access. Mats spread vehicle loads, preventing rutting and soil disturbance. At project end, mats are removed and areas restored — a critical permit requirement. Inert HDPE does not degrade, weather, or leach into the subsurface.
Pipeline Right-of-Way Restoration
An 8-mile, 24-inch water pipeline in Lycoming County, PA, crossing four streams and 23 wetlands, uses temporary bridges and HDPE mats over all wetland and stream crossings. All operations follow environmental permit requirements with full restoration upon completion. Non-absorbent mat surfaces prevent cross-site contamination between agricultural, wetland, and forest areas. Recycled plastic mats save thousands of trees compared to timber alternatives.
Swamp & Bog Mat Selection
HDPE bog mats: 100% recycled materials, 4×8ft panels ~39–45 kg, load capacity 40–120+ tons depending on thickness. Impervious to moisture, resist rot/decay/insects, chemically inert, UV-protected. Interlocking systems enable fast deployment without heavy equipment. Best for: wetland crossings, swamp access, environmentally sensitive areas, repeated projects, remote sites accessible by helicopter. Service life: 5–15+ years, fully recyclable.
